SOPHIE | Queer Magazine

Final project I did for my Specialization Studio class at Seneca. I decided to go with the Editorial Illustration field so, as part of my graduation project, I got to work on my self-published independent magazine!

These series of illustrations were created for the first issue of the magazine under guidance of Salini Perera. I found Salini’s work right before enrolling into the Editorial Illustration option and I knew right away I was going to be in right hands with such talented and wholesome illustrator as my teacher… and, indeed, I was lucky enough to get the most valuable feedback and knowledge ever throughout the process of this project.

The Legacy of a Trans Visionary

Named after Sophie Xeon, a trans DJ and producer who pioneered contemporary experimental electronic music, SOPHIE was created as an act of resistance, as an advocate of diversity and as a strong cry of pride. Its mission is to serve as a spotlight for queer musicians of the modern era and to amplify the voices of communities that need and deserve to be heard.

The Fascinating Scene of Queer Bruk

Feature illustration I created for the magazine's 'Trending' section. The article explores the vibrant culture of Queer Bruk, one of London's most popular queer, black club nights that celebrates Afro-Caribbean music.

Proud to highlight the diverse and inclusive communities across the globe!

Exploring the World of Hyperpop

Half-page composition and spot illustrations I created to accompany Carrie Battan's article "The Brash, Exuberant Sounds of Hyperpop", included in the magazine's 'Music' section.

This fascinating read explores the rise of a new generation of artists who are pushing the boundaries of experimental sounds and catchy pop melodies, collectively known as Hyperpop. Among the many talented artists mentioned are A. G. Cook, felicita, SOPHIE, umru, Danny L Harle, and more.

The Resilience of Queer Hip-Hop Artists

Half-page illustration I created for the magazine's 'Culture' section. The illustration is featured in an article titled 'The Evolving Voice: LGBTQ Acceptance in Hip-Hop,' written by Mike Pompliano.

This article is incredibly important to me because it sheds light on the way queerness is carving out its own space in an industry that has traditionally been associated with toxic masculinity and violence. For the illustration, I drew inspiration from some of my favorite queer rappers such as Lil Nas X, Kevin Abstract, Kalifa (Le1f), Mykki Blanco, and Frank Ocean to pay homage to their work and resistance.

The Phenomenon of Female Gay Icons

Feature illustrations and portraits I did of Lady Gaga and Beyoncé for the magazine's 'Opinion' article titled “Why Do Gay Men Idolize Female Pop Stars?”.

The article is a fascinating exploration of the unique connection between gay men and female musicians. Bobby Box penned the insightful piece.
